LACE - handmade or manufactured open work fabric formed by a system of intertwined threads
LACQUER - synthetic coating dried to form a protective film
LALIQUE - exceptional French Art Nouveau glassware designer Renee Lalique (1860 - 1945)
LAMBREQUIN - decorative window treatment made of a wood frame formed around sides and top of window, often padded and fabric covered
LAMINATED - cloth and synthetic layers bonded together to improve performance and appearance
LAMINATION - method of bonding one layer to another
LAMP - light source i.e. bulb, also used to describe a light fixture
LANDING - intermediate floor between a flight of stairs
LAP DESK - wood hinged box, which provides a slanted-writing surface when flipped open, often seen with a leather, tooled inset, i.e. See WRITING DESK
LATEX - milky, fluid, synthetic adhesive used to seal the back of carpet
LATTICE - open work fabric featuring diagonal crisscross patterns
LAYOUT - defining space for a specific purpose; prior arrangement of design to be implemented
LEADED GLASS - decorative window created with small pieces of clear, beveled or stained glass or jewels soldered together with lead caming and framed in wood
LEAD TIME - amount of time required to receive a product once it has been ordered
LEATHER - preserved and tanned hide of an animal. See SUEDE
LEATHER-LIKE - reproduction material emulating an animal hide. See LEATHER, SUEDE
LEVEL LOOP - tufted carpet construction where all loops are the same pile height
LIGHTING - source that illuminates, i.e. lamp, sun ; effect of light on a space or place, i.e. adequate lighting
LIGHT SOURCE - origination of light, i.e. chandelier, recessed lighting, up light
LINEN - thread or woven fabric made from natural flax cellulose fibers, which offers strength, texture and luster
LINEN FOLD - Tudor carved wood detail representing fabric folds on paneling
LINING - any fabric used for backing drapery, bedding, table runners, etc. which is often light-weight, but can be heavier to block out light. See BLACK-OUT LINING
LINOLEUM - natural flooring made of linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments
LINTEL - horizontal wood member used structural to span an opening
LISSERIE - jacquard stripe fabric simulating silk and embroidery
LIVING QUARTERS - any structure functioning as a home for multiple activities including cooking, relaxing, sleeping and bathing
LOFT - urban, expansive warehouse space, which is often converted into living quarters; platform or level above another interior area. See ABODE, APARTMENT, BUNGALOW, COTTAGE, DOMICILE, DWELLING, FARMHOUSE, HOME, HOUSE, MANOR, MANSION, RANCH HOUSE, STUDIO, VILLA
LOOM - frame or machine for interlacing vertical parallel threads, or warp threads with horizontal, or weft parallel threads. See FILLING
LOUVER - horizontal slats framed on a 45-degree angle to shed rain and allow air circulation, often operable
LOVESEAT - upholstered seating designed to seat two, usually with arms and back. See COUCH
LUSTER - decorative hand-blown, cut or etched glass pendants used on a candlesticks or chandeliers
